Sunday Funnies – How ‘Bout Dem Apples?

I love apples.   Might be my favorite fruit. (the other possibility is tomatoes, which are a FRUIT everyone thinks is a vegetable.  Fruits have seeds.  Vegetables have roots stems, or leaves.Grains and nuts don’t count, they are their own category.)

I  am a fan of crisp, tart, juicy varieites like the Haralson. Thankfully, there are organizations searching for, finding, and cultivating old legacy apple varieties thought to have become extinct.  The Smithsonian has a great article on apple variety rescue and cultivation efforts.

Haralson has become hard to find, having been replaced in many orchards with the new super-sweet varieties coming out of the U of Minnesota.

“The ‘Honeycrisp’ apple is the most widely known Minnesota apple, appreciated for its distinctive taste and texture. Other University of Minnesota releases include Zestar! ®, SnowSweet®, SweeTango® and the newest U of M apple, Rave®, which Minnesota growers will market as First Kiss®.”  And there are other super-sweet apples like the Fuji and Ambrosia.  Great apples, I’ve tried them all, but just as I prefer older legacy tomatoes for their more complex flavors, I love old apples that are tart to the point of being sour, like citrus.

Here’s hoping some of the orchards I patronize will keep a few of the old favorites around for guys like me.

What’s your favorite apple?  Leave a comment.
