Sunday Funnies – Minnesota “City of Tomorrow”

Because I live in Minnesota and grew up here, I occasionally find a story with local interest.  When I first read the headline for this story in an email from the Smithsonian, I assumed they were going to be talking about the urban experiment that was Jonathan, southwest of the Twin Cities near Chanhassen.

How a $10 Billion Experimental City Nearly Got Built in Rural Minnesota

A new documentary explores the “city of the future” that was meant to provide a blueprint for urban centers across America.  This new urban paradise was to be built in Aitkin County near Swatara.  The story is fascinating, but I do not remember having ever heard of this project before, when I was younger..

The undercurrent of how the idealism and futurism of the 60’s fell to the recession and political reaities of the 70’s was particularly poignant.  There is a documentary video for sale, and a list of public screenings if you are interested in going deep on this story.  From The Smithsonian
