March 31 is World Backup Day

Is it really backed up? Or is it dead?

Tuesday, March 31 is World Backup Day.  Wednesday April 1st is “I don’t backup day.”  It is also April Fool’s Day.  Is there a connection?

In the era of crypto-ransomware attacks, backup is considered one of the cornerstones of a good cybersecurity program.  Having a automatic backup system, and full set of recent and tested backups is critical for businesses of any size.  Current ransomware exploits often will encrypt network attached backup solutions too.  Would your current backup solution survive a ransomware attack?  Make sure yours has defenses against ransomware, or find a new backup solution that does.

These days to be fully protected, you may have 4 sets of your data: the original file or document, the local backup copy on a NAS or backup server for quick restore, an offsite online copy of your backup in case the local backup fails, and perhaps an air-gapped, physically disconnected copy in a vault.  The last one will survive crypto-ransomware for sure.
