Search Engines for the Internet of Things

IOTIf you are curious how some of the research we featured in the last several post was accomplished, there is a company called Censys that has developed a search engine for Internet connected devices.  I took a quick look, and immediately thought of applications that I could use when penetration testing.  Take a minute to read the tutorial in you want to try it out for yourself. According to their website:

“Censys is a search engine that enables researchers to ask questions about the hosts and networks that compose the Internet. Censys collects data on hosts and websites through daily ZMap and ZGrab scans of the IPv4 address space, in turn maintaining a database of how hosts and websites are configured. Researchers can interact with this data through a search interface, report builder, and SQL engine.”

If your quest is a little more voyeuristic, there are a couple of search engines for web connected cameras.  The first is Shodan, which says on thier home page: “Websites are just one part of the Internet. There are power plants, Smart TVs, refrigerators and much more that can be found with Shodan!”  The second is EarthCam, “the global network of owned and operated live streaming webcams, was built as a way to transport people to interesting and unique locations around the world that may be difficult or impossible to experience in person. Providing a virtual window to the world, viewers can freely explore the globe from unparalleled vantage points, such as the torch balcony of the Statue of Liberty, which has been closed to the public since 1916.”

So go ahead and take a look at the Internet of Things in a different way.
